Menopause and Anxiety

Keeping body and soul together during difficult times can be tough. We have lots to contend with and many plates to spin. When we add Menopause symptoms to the mix it can be very draining.
Menopause has 34 recorded symptoms and we may suffer with one or a selection of these in varying degrees for an unknown period of time. The most common symptoms are Hot Flushes, Anxiety and disturbed sleep. These common symptoms can make it difficult to function as we would normally function, and some women report a dip in their confidence levels during this time.
Anxiety can be greatly increased during the menopause and can take its toll on our mental well-being. One factor in increasing Anxiety can be triggered by the change in our hormone levels. Studies report that 23% of women experience symptoms of anxiety during perimenopause. I personally think that as the duration of the Menopause symptoms is unknown this can be a factor in the increase of anxiety levels and a lot of woman ask “How long is this going to last”; “When will this be over”. The answer is each woman has different symptoms and duration but it will pass.
Thankfully our current generation have access to a lot more information than previous generations. Historically the term “menopause” was first coined in 1821 by French physician Dr. Charles Negrier, who attributed women’s complaints of depression, hot flushes and irregular periods to problems of the uterus. At that time doctors were quick to diagnose women with “hysteria” – coming from the Greek word “hysterus” which literally means “womb.” In some cases women were actually institutionalised with the condition listed as “Insane by suppressed menses”.
We have come a long way with our understanding of what menopause is since then, but we are still learning on how to manage and cope with the associated symptoms. As someone who is very much in the throes of Menopause I have spent time researching and finding solutions to the physical and emotional symptoms of menopause.
