“No One Warned Me About This”: A Gentle Conversation About Menopause part 2 of 6

I’ll never forget the first time I woke up drenched in sweat, heart pounding, with no idea why. I wasn’t sick. I wasn’t stressed. But my body had clearly decided to change the rules overnight.

You’re not alone. That night, about 10 years ago, was the beginning of my menopause journey, though I didn’t know it yet. Like many women in the UK, I had heard of menopause. I knew it would come “one day.” But no one told me what it would feel like. Or that it might begin long before my last period. Or that it would affect not just my body, but my confidence, my relationships, even my work.

And the hardest part?

This was over 10 years and it felt like no one was talking about it.

🔍 So What Is Menopause, Really?

Medically, menopause means 12 months without a period. It usually happens in our late 40s or early 50s. But perimenopause, the years leading up to it, can be a wild ride all on its own.

Your hormones begin to shift. And with them, so do you.

Hot flushes. Sleepless nights. Anxiety. Brain fog. Skin that suddenly feels like sandpaper. Libido? What libido?

The NHS says 75% of women experience hot flushes. But many also feel something harder to describe: a sense that they’re not quite themselves anymore.

I’ve asked myself that question more than once. Especially during moments when I felt like I was slipping away from the version of me I used to recognise.
